The Original Cape Cod House Plans

Cape cods are short, stout, and simple to the point of austerity. Nevertheless, they evoke powerful images of warmth and comfort, integrity and safety. A true colonial type widely copied to this day. Cape cod homes are the epitomy of the post-war American housing and were built prolifically throughout suburban neighborhoods to accommodate growing families. Beginning in the 1940’s and continuing to today, modest cape cod homes have been built with simplicity and function in mind.

These homes are usually one story with flat façade, side-gable roof and little embellishment. Sometimes a small front stoop with a gable roof extends from the home to welcome guests and provide shelter from the elements. Although modern cape cods are very popular today, this style of home was originally conceived in the early 18th century and marked an expansion of house size.

Cape cod style homes are often constructed of brick or wood frame with clapboard siding. The entryway is usually centered on the façade with windows placed symmetrically to either side. A single chimney is often either centered on the roofline or placed at the end. Sidelights at the front entrance and shutters with decorative cutouts are often the only embellishment on the exterior of these homes.

The house plan is flexible, as the long front façade allows for easy extension at the rear. If sited on the correct lot, this home could potentially be quiet large. Place bedrooms to one side and leave the other side open for expansive living space on one level. Alternatively, this floor plan would easily accommodate a more traditional layout with separate dining room, living room, kitchen, and den. Growing families and empty nesters alike will appreciate the ease of having bedrooms and living areas closes at hand. Build a deck at the rear for outdoor living space and easy entertaining. Cape cod homes are also perfect for vacation cottages and would sit nicely on a lakefront lot or by the sea.
